Living in the Moment

The future is not promised and the past is already gone. What do you have? Just the present. This moment in time, right now. Don’t waste it.

This is much easier said than done. It is wonderful to reminisce about the good times of the past. Remembering often puts a smile on my face. Daydreaming about the future does precisely the same. I often find myself wondering if that’s really healthy.

Thinking about something exciting coming up in the near future is fun, it creates anticipation. What about dreaming without limitation? You meet someone new, someone exciting, you can’t help but imagine what the future holds.

I often find myself wanting to get there, wherever there might be. I have to constantly caution myself that life really is about the journey and if you just skip to the end, it’s over. Enjoy the ride, you must!

Too many times in life, I skip ahead. I want to know what’s coming so I can prepare for it instead of enjoying the moment, or person, directly in front of me. It is a problem that does not allow me to fully experience the simplest of pleasures in life.

If I knew how to change it, I wouldn’t hesitate. Dreaming serves a purpose but I have to remember it’s just that: a dream. It can become a reality but, until it does, I must stay present. Stop obsessing about what might happen and enjoy what is happening. Stay present, stay in the moment and enjoy the moment as it happens.

I have trouble subscribing to my own advice but I’m working on making that change. I often find my mind wandering then smack myself in the face remembering to stay present. That’s what life is about. Enjoy the moments.
